The Office of the Accountant General, (Local Bodies, Audit & Accounts), Maharashtra, Mumbai came into existence on 30.11.2010. Consequent to the Eleventh Finance Commission recommendation for improvement of accounting and auditing arrangements at the Local Government level including an enhanced role for the Comptroller & Auditor General, the office was initially setup as the office of the Sr. Deputy. Accountant General, Local Bodies, (Audit & Accounts), Maharashtra, Mumbai on 28.07.2004

The office is situated in the 1st floor of Pratishtha Bhavan (Old Central Government offices Complex), Maharshi Karve Marg, New Marine Lines, Mumbai – 400 020. 

Consequent to the instruction of O/o Comptroller & Auditor General dated 29/06/2011, the office Sr. Dy. Accountant General (Local Bodies Audit & Accounts) Maharashtra, Nagpur is brought under the centralized control of O/o Accountant General (Local Bodies) Audit & Accounts Maharashtra, Mumbai.

In the State of Maharashtra this office is responsible for audit arrangement of all the three tiers of Panchayati Raj Institutions and also Urban Local Bodies including Municipal Corporations and Municipal Councils. In total 33 Zilla Parishads, 351 number of Panchayat Samities and Gram Panchayats there under, 23 Municipal Corporations and 218 Municipal Councils are under the audit mandate of this office.
